How long after stopping Finasteride does hair loss usually start?

Hey everyone,

Here’s a bit of my story. I started using Finasteride and applying Regaine foam a few years ago. Before that, my hair was falling out at an alarming rate over just a couple of months. The crown and the back of my head were basically bald, and the front was rapidly thinning. It was a really tough and depressing time for me.

After starting Finasteride and Regaine, though, my hair completely bounced back within a month. It was even thicker than it had been 10–15 years ago. I never noticed a shedding phase, but I also had my head shaved during that time. The only issue I faced was with my libido—it dropped noticeably. However, when I switched to taking the pill every other day, my libido not only came back but improved beyond what it had been before I started Finasteride. Surprisingly, it actually enhanced things for me in that department!

Now, 3 weeks ago, I decided to stop taking Finasteride because my partner and I are trying for another baby. I was terrified, imagining that all my hair would start falling out again and that I wouldn’t be able to recover it, or worse, that the medication wouldn’t work a second time. But so far, my hair hasn’t changed. There was one day where I noticed some shedding when I ruffled my hair, but that stopped quickly. On the flip side, my libido has skyrocketed—I feel like a teenager again, which is both amusing and a bit awkward at times.

Everything seems almost too good to be true, but I’m still bracing myself for the hair loss to start. How long does it typically take after stopping Finasteride for the shedding to kick in? Anyone with similar experiences?

Dude from my experience, it can vary a lot. For me, shedding started about 6–8 weeks after stopping Finasteride, but it wasn’t as bad as I feared.

It’s good that you’re still using Regaine—that might slow things down. Just keep an eye on it and try not to stress (easier said than done, I know).

Good luck with everything, including the baby plans!

Hi gentleman,
I stopped Finasteride a few months ago, and I didn’t see much shedding until about 2–3 months after.
I think it’s normal for your body to take some time to adjust.
Since you’re already seeing some benefits off the medication, it’s possible your hair might hold up better than expected.
Just keep monitoring it and don’t worry too much for now! 😉

Man, you’ve really been on a roller coaster! 🤣

The whole “Will my hair start falling out after stopping Finasteride?” thing is the big question for everyone. But usually, it takes a little while for it to kick in, so don’t expect it to happen immediately. A friend of mine stopped it a while ago, and his hair did start shedding a few weeks after, but then it kind of slowed down. So, maybe just hang in there a bit longer.

The libido thing is hilarious! Yeah, Finasteride can mess with that, but sounds like you’ve cracked the code. If everything keeps going smooth, maybe you’ll get a little shedding here and there, but overall, I hope things stay on track. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for this stuff, right?
